Organized in 1788 as the Presbyterian Church of Frankstown and later changed to the Presbyterian Church of Hollidaysburg, the congregation worshiped in a log structure built in 1790 in the old section of the present Presbyterian Cemetery. When that log structure was destroyed by fire, a second church was built in 1818. Later, the church was relocated to its present site at the northeast corner of Penn and Walnut Streets.
When the church building was declared unsafe in 1868, worship services were moved to the Court House and construction of the present sanctuary was begun with the laying of the cornerstone in 1869. Regular worship services began December 31, 1871. A new organ was installed, and the Education Building was completed in 1967.
Sixteen ministers have served The First Presbyterian Church from 1788 to the present.
We trust God is doing “a new thing” within our church family’s life and ministry. “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future and a hope” Jeremiah 29:11.
In seeking to follow God’s plans for us, our major goals are: To nurture, build up, love and serve one another; to follow the example of Christ, reaching out to and serving our neighbors; offer various types of excellent worship services; and to pay special attention to the needs and potential involvement of youth and young families.
